Abstract :
The assortmentplanningprobleminvolveschoosinganoptimalproductline,asdefinedbyasetof
productswithspecificattributes,toofferconsumers.Underalocationalchoicemodelinwhichproducts
are differentiatedbothhorizontally(byvarietyattributes)andvertically(byqualityattributes),an
optimalassortment,whoseattributeshaveonlybeenpartiallycharacterized,mayconsistofmultiple
qualitylevels.Usingpreviousanalyticalresults,weapproximatetheoptimalassortmentformake-to-
order andstaticsubstitutionenvironments.Wetesttheappropriatenessandcomparetheperformance
of threemetaheuristicmethods.Thesemetaheuristicscaneasilybemodifiedtoaccommodatedifferent
consumerpreferencedistributionassumptions.
