Abstract
A varietyofmetaheuristicapproacheshaveemergedinrecentyearsforsolvingtheresource-
constrainedprojectschedulingproblem(RCPSP),awell-knownNP-hardprobleminscheduling.Inthis
paper,weproposeaNeurogeneticapproachwhichisahybridofgeneticalgorithms(GA)andneural-
network(NN)approaches.InthishybridapproachthesearchprocessreliesonGAiterationsforglobal
search andonNNiterationsforlocalsearch.TheGAandNNsearchiterationsareinterleavedina
manner thatallowsNNtopickthebestsolutionthusfarfromtheGApoolandperforman
intensificationsearchinthesolution’slocalneighborhood.Similarly,goodsolutionsobtainedbyNN
search areincludedintheGApopulationforfurthersearchusingtheGAiterations.AlthoughbothGA
and NNapproaches,independentlygivegoodsolutions,wefoundthatthehybridapproachgivesbetter
solutionsthaneitherapproachindependentlyforthesamenumberofsharediterations.We
demonstratetheeffectivenessofthisapproachempiricallyonthestandardbenchmarkproblemsof
size J30,J60,J90andJ120fromPSPLIB.
