  • Abstract
    The travelingpurchaserproblem(TPP)istheproblemofdeterminingatourofapurchaserthatneedsto buy severalitemsindifferentshopssuchthatthetotalamountoftravelandpurchasecostsis minimized.Motivatedbyanapplicationinmachinescheduling,westudyavariantoftheproblemwith additionalconstraints,namely,alimitonthemaximumnumberofmarketstobevisited,alimitonthe numberofitemsboughtpermarketandwhereonlyonecopyperitemneedstobebought.Wepresent an integer linearprogramming (ILP) modelwhichisadequateforobtainingoptimalintegersolutionsfor instanceswithupto100markets.WealsopresentandtestseveralvariationsofaLagrangianrelaxation combinedwithasubgradientoptimizationprocedure.Therelaxedproblemcanbesolvedbydynamic programmingandcanalsobeviewedasresultingfromapplyingastatespacerelaxationtechniquetoa dynamicprogrammingformulation.TheLagrangianbasedmethodiscombinedwithaheuristicthat attemptstotransformrelaxedsolutionsintofeasiblesolutions.Computationalresultsforinstances with upto300marketsshowthatwiththeexceptionofafewcases,thereporteddifferencesbetween best upperboundandlowerboundvaluesontheoptimalsolutionsarereasonablysmall.
