Abstract
The conceptsoffloatandcriticalpatharecentraltoanalyzingactivitynetworksinprojectmanagement.In
resource-constrainedprojects,schedulemultiplicitymakesitdifficulttocalculatefloatandidentifycritical
activities accurately.Inthiswork,newconcepts offloatandcriticalactivityaredevelopedtoascertaincritical
activities morepreciselywithoutreferencetoactivity startandendtimesinspecificschedules.Thenotionsof
float, groupfloat,floatset,negativefloatandzerocritical activityareintroduced,whichtheprojectmanager
can usetodealmoreeffectivelywithcriticalactivities,durationuncertainty,activitybuffering,andresource
allocationthanthecurrentlyavailabletoolsinliterature. Forpracticalimplementation,algorithmsare
provided andtestedtocalculatethenewmeasuresonthePSPLIBbenchmarkinstances,specificallytheJ30,
J60andJ120testsets,fortheresourceconstrainedprojectmanagement,illustratingtheeffectivenessofthe
proposedconceptsinhelpingtoidentifyflexibilityinschedulingactivities.
