Abstract
This paperfocusesontherailwayrollingstockcirculationprobleminrapidtransitnetworks,inwhich
frequenciesarehighanddistancesarerelativelyshort.Althoughthedistancesarenotverylarge,service
times arehighduetothelargenumberofintermediatestopsrequiredtoallowproperpassengerflow.The
main complicatingissueisthefactthattheavailablecapacityatdepotstationsisverylow,andboth
capacityandrollingstockaresharedbetweendifferenttrainlines.Thisforcestheintroductionofempty
train movementsandrotationmaneuvers,toensuresufficientstationcapacityandrollingstock
availability.
However,theseshuntingoperationsmaysometimesbedifficulttoperformandcaneasily
malfunction,causinglocalizedincidentsthatcouldpropagatethroughouttheentirenetworkdueto
cascadingeffects.Thistypeofoperationwillbepenalizedwiththegoalofselectivelyavoidingthemand
amelioratingtheirhighmalfunctionprobabilities.Critictrains,definedastrainservicesthatcome
throughstationsthathavealargenumberofpassengersarrivingattheplatformduringrushhours,are
also introduced.
We illustrateourmodelusingcomputationalexperimentsdrawnfromRENFE(themainSpanish
operatorofsuburbanpassengertrains)inMadrid,Spain.Theresultsofthemodel,achievedin
approximately1min,havebeenreceivedpositivelybyRENFEplanners.
