Abstract
Floods cause significant damages not only on, but also beneath the earth’s surface. Infiltration of surface
water into deeper soil, flooding of the urban sewer system and, in consequence, rising groundwater levels
are main causes of subsurface damages. Nevertheless risk assessments for rising groundwater are levels
essential for subterranean infrastructure and buildings. The results show that the surface flooding has the
dominant effect on the flood damages in the case study region (Shiraz). Furthermore it has been indicated
that one or tow months after the flood happened the groundwater in various regions of shiraz urban even
though 5000m far from the river borders reached their maximum level.
