Abstract :
Asafedesignforafastbreederreactor(FBR)requirespost-accidentheatremoval(PAHR)foranypotentialcoredisruptiveaccident(CDA).Itisimportanttoensurethatthemoltencorematerialsolidifiesinthesodiumcoolantinthereactorvesselevenifallofthecorematerialhasmelted.Inthepresentexperiment,moltenmaterialwasinjectedintowatertoexperimentallyobtaintheinformationonthemoltenmaterialjetenteringthecoolantanditsfragmentation.Visualinformationwasobtainedwithahigh-speedvideocamera,showingthatfragmentationbehavioronthesideofthejetwasdifferentfromthatonthejetfront,andthattheinjectionnozzlediametersignificantlyinfluencedthejetbreakuplength,whilethemoltenjettemperatureandthecoolanttemperaturedidnotinfluencethejetbreakuplength.ComparisonofthediametersoffragmentsofthesolidifiedmoltenmaterialthusobtainedwithfragmentationtheoryshowsthatthemedianfragmentdiameterisbetweenthecriticalWebernumbertheoryandthemost-unstablewavelengthoftheinstabilitytheoryofsurfacewavesatagasliquidinterface.
