Abstract :
MechanicalpropertiesofZircaloy-4claddingwereevaluatedbytheringtensiontesttosimulatethecladdingbehaviorunderthereactivity-initiatedaccident(RIA)inahighburnupenvironment.Zircaloy-4claddingwascontrolledtohaveahydrogencontentupto1000ppmandaoxidethicknessupto100μm,followedbyacircumferentialringtensiontestwithastrainrateintherangeof0.01and1/s.Theresultsshowedthatboththeductilityandtoughnessdecreasedasthehydrogencontentandtheoxidethicknessincreased.Hydrideinsidethecladdingplayedanimportantroleinthebrittlefailuremechanismbyadecohesionbetweenthehydrideandthemetalmatrixaswellasapreferentialfractureofthebrittlehydride.Surfaceoxidealsoaffectedthemechanicalpropertysuchasareductionoftheloadbearingarea,stressrelievingeffect,andsoon.Correlationbetweenthein-reactorRIAparameterssuchasthefuelenthalpyandout-reactormechanicaltoughnesswaspostulatedanditwasconcludedthatthechangeofthemechanicaltoughnesscausedbytheoxidewasmoresignificantthanthatbythehydrogen.
