Abstract :
Groundmotionrecordsfromrecentearthquakesshowthatnear-faultgroundmotionsaredifferentfromfar-fieldgroundmotionsinthattheyoftencontainstrongcoherentdynamiclongperiodpulsesandpermanentgrounddisplacements.Theobjectiveofthecurrentstudyistoassessthesafetyimplicationsofnear-faultearthquakes(NFE)onnuclearpowerplantstructuresdesignedaccordingtoNorthAmericancodes.Fifty-fourfault-normalnear-faultrecordsintheforwarddirectivitywereselectedforthisinvestigation.SpectralcomparisonoftheselectedearthquakerecordswiththeUSandCanadiandesignspectrawasconducted.Fromtheinvestigationitwasconcludedthatthecurrentnucleardesignspectramayneedtobeadjustedtobetterreflecttheeffectofnear-faultearthquakegroundmotions.
