Abstract :
Intheveryunlikelycaseofacoremeltaccidentinanuclearpowerplant,thereactorpressurevesselcouldfailandcoriummeltcouldbereleasedintothereactorcavity.Subsequentprocessescouldresultinathreatofthecontainmentintegrity.Asacounter-measuretheimplementationofacore-catcherdeviceinnuclearpowerplantsisenvisaged.Suchacore-catcherconcepthasbeendevelopedattheForschungszentrumKarlsruhe(FZK,Germany)withintheCOMETproject.Itisbasedonwaterinjectionintothemeltlayerfromthebottom,yieldingrapidfragmentationofthecorium,porosityformationandthuscoolability.DetailedlargescaleexperimentswithsustainedheatingofmeltshavehighlightedthesequencesoffloodingandcoolingandhavebeenusedtooptimisetheCOMETconcept.Theopenporositiesandlargesurfacesthataregeneratedduringmeltsolidificationformaporouspermeablestructurethatispermanentlyfilledwiththeevaporatingcoolantwaterandthusallowsefficientshort-termandlong-termremovalofthedecayheat.Twovariantsofthebottomfloodingconcepthavebeendevelopedandseemtechnicallymatureforreactorapplication.Coriumlayersupto0.5mhigharesafelyarrestedandcooledbywatersupplywith0.2baroverpressure.
