Abstract :
Ajointstudyonthetechnicalfeasibilityofusing0.9%slightlyenricheduranium(SEU)fuelintheEmbalseCANDUreactorwasperformedbyAtomicEnergyofCanadaLimited(AECL)andNucleoeléctricaArgentinaS.A.(NASA).Thefeasibilitystudyfocusedonthefollowingtechnicalareas:reactorphysicsandfuelmanagement,fuelperformance,andsafety.PartofthesafetyassessmentinvolveddetailedthermalhydraulicsanalysesofthreeaccidentscenariosforafullcoreofSEUfuelbundles:(i)slowloss-of-reactivitycontrol(LORC)event,(ii)large-breakloss-of-coolantaccident(LBLOCA)withemergencycorecoolingsystem(ECCS)available,and(iii)end-fittingfailure.Otheraccidentscenariospossiblyencounteredduringthedemonstrationirradiationexerciseortransitioncorehavealsobeenexamined.ItisconcludedthatintroducingSEUfuelintotheEmbalseCANDUreactorisfeasible.Clearadvantages(e.g.,fuelcostsaving,increaseinfuelexitburnup,andreductioninspentfuelvolume)havebeenidentified.Thereductioninmaximumbundlepowersandtheshiftofthemaximumbundle-powerlocationtotheinletofthechannelfortheSEUfuelimproveoperatingandsafetymargins.ThesemarginsarehigherwiththeCANFLEXSEUfuelthanthe37-elementSEUfuel,duetolowerlinearpowersandimprovedthermalhydraulicdesign.
