Abstract :
Inordertoenhancethefeasibilityofin-vesselretention(IVR)ofmoltencorematerialduringasevereaccidentforhigh-powerreactors,anin-vesselcorecatcher(IVCC)wasdesignedandevaluatedaspartofajointUnitedStates-KoreanInternationalNuclearEnergyResearchInitiative(INERI).TheproposedIVCCisexpectedtoincreasethethermalmarginforsuccessofIVRbyprovidingan“engineeredgap”forheattransferfrommaterialsthatrelocateduringasevereaccidentandpotentiallyservingasasacrificialmaterialunderasevereaccident.Inthisstudy,LAVA-GAPexperimentswereperformedtoinvestigatethethermalandmechanicalperformanceoftheIVCCusingthealuminameltassimulant.TheLAVA-GAPexperimentsaimtoexaminethefeasibilityandsustainabilityoftheIVCCunderthevarioustestconditionsusing1/8thscalehemisphericaltestsections.AsafeasibilitytestoftheproposedIVCCinthisINERIproject,theeffectsofIVCCbasesteelmaterials,internalcoatingmaterials,andgapsizebetweentheIVCCandthevessellowerheadwereexamined.ThetestresultsindicatedthattheinternallycoatedIVCChashighthermalperformancecomparedwiththeuncoatedIVCC.Intermsofintegrityofthebasesteel,carbonsteelissuperiortostainlesssteelandtheeffectofbondcoatisfoundtobetrivialforthetestsperformedinthisstudy.ThethermalloadismitigatedviaboilingheatremovalinthegapbetweentheIVCCandthevessellowerhead.Thecurrenttestresultsimplythatgapslessthan10mmarenotenoughtoguaranteeeffectivecoolinginducedbywateringressionandsteamventingtherethrough.SelectionofendurablematerialandpertinentgapsizeisneededtoimplementtheproposedIVCCconceptintoadvancedreactordesigns.
