Abstract :
EmbrittlementofthereactorpressurevesseloftheBorsselenuclearpowerplanthasbeeninvestigatedtakingaccountofthedesignlifetimeof40yearsandconsidering20yearssubsequentlifetimeextension.ThepaperpresentsthecurrentlicensingstatusbasedonconsiderationsofmaterialtestdataandofUSnuclearregulatorystandards.EmbrittlementstatusisalsoevaluatedagainstGermanandFrenchnuclearsafetystandards.ResultsfrompreviousfracturetoughnessandCharpytestsareinvestigatedbymeansoftheMastercurvetoughnesstransitionapproach.Finally,stateoftheartinsightsareinvestigatedbymeansofliteratureresearch.RegardingtheembrittlementstatusofthereactorpressurevesselofBorsselenuclearpowerplantitisconcludedthatthereisaprofoundbasisforthecurrentlicenseuptotheoriginalendofthedesignlifein2013.Theembrittlementtemperaturechangesonlyslightlywithrespecttotheacceptancecriterionadoptedpostulatingfurtheroperationupto2033.Continuedsafeoperationandfurtherlifetimeextensionarethereforenotrestrictedbyreactorpressurevesselembrittlement.
