Abstract :
Whenanuclearpowerplantisinshutdownconditionsforrefuelling,thereactorcoolantsystemwaterlevelisreduced.Thissituationisknownasmid-loopoperation,andtheresidualheatremoval(RHR)systemisusedinthissituationtoremovethedecaypowerheatgeneratedinthereactorcore. Inmid-loopconditions,someaccidentalsituationsmayoccurwithnotanegligiblecontributiontotheplantrisk,andallinvolvethelossoftheRHRsystem.Thus,tobetterunderstandthethermal–hydraulicprocessesfollowingthelossoftheRHRduringshutdown,transientsofthiskindhavebeensimulatedusingbest-estimatecodesindifferentintegraltestfacilities.Thispaperfocusesonthesimulation,usingthebestestimatecodeRELAP5/Mod3.3,oftheexperimentE3.1conductedatthePKLfacility.ThisexperimentconsistsofthelossoftheRHRsystemwhentheplantisinmid-loopconditionsforrefuellingandwiththeprimarycircuitclosed.Inparticular,inthisexperimentthephysicalphenomenatoinvestigatearethemechanismsofheatremovalinpresenceofnitrogenandthedeborationincriticalpartsoftheprimarysystem.
