  • Abstract
For the modeling and numerical solution of the compressible flow in a benchmark engine a network formulation is used. The presented engine consists of a single cylinder with inlet and outlet valve, respectively one suction and exhaust pipe and two connections with the atmosphere. The time history of the cylinder is described by an ODE system which introduces heat losses and combustion energy by means of measurement. Considering the gas flow in pipes leads to the unsteady, one-dimensional Euler equations which are numerically treated by a TVD scheme. In contrast to classical difference schemes spurious numerical oscillations are prevented. A DAE system in time is achieved by a semi-empirical approach for the cylinder and its connections, and it is solved by a predictor-corrector method. As numerical experiments show, the presented approach results in a fast solver for the benchmark engine and is of interest in industrial research too.
