It is shown for a non-identity automorphism α of a symmetric 2-(v, k, λ) design fixing f points that f⩽14(ν+3κ−6) if|α|⩾3, f⩽13(ν+2κ−4) if|α|⩾2 where |α| denotes the order of α.
