Abstract :
A study was conducted to diagnose early pregnancy loss (EPL) in cows with regular cyclicity vs. cows with cycles > 25 d. Cows which had a history of inter-estrus period of more than 25 days were included in Group-1 (n=52) and cows having regular cyclicity were placed in Group-2 (n=84). By transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) cows were confirmed pregnant on day 25 and then sequentially followed on day 35, 45 and day 55 to record the growth or disappearance of developing embryo and its fluids and the embryonic heart beat. EPL was confirmed by disappearance of embryo and the shrinkage of fluids. Higher percentage of EPL was observed in Group -1 along with low fertility in comparison to Group-2, although differences were not significant statistically. The study revealed that early pregnancy loss was common up to day 55 in cows although they were more frequent up to day 35 of pregnancy. Early pregnancy loss can be detected by sequential ultrasonography.
