Abstract :
Tswana chicken farming can provide cheaper animal proteins and employment for women in villages and rural areas. The money obtained from selling chicken can help in buying food, toiletry and school uniform for children and thus alleviating poverty and improving the standard of living. Due to the increase in population and high cost of beef, there is a need to increase the supply of chicken which is relatively cheaper than beef. The study was conducted to find out the constraints to Tswana chicken farming among women in Lentsweletau village. Fifty questionnaires were randomly distributed to respondents. Forty-three questionnaires were retrieved. The study revealed a high percentage of unemployment among respondents. The results indicated that the respondents were interested on Tswana chicken farming but lacked funds to establish chicken farms. However, 39.53% of the respondents said they knew about Livestock Management and Infrastructure Development (LIMID) programme which was introduced by the government of Botswana to empower local communities and help curb rural-urban migration. About 77% of the respondents had basic education hence education may be taken as one of the limitations.
