Abstract
Trading and risk management services are essential components of liberalized electricity markets. They thrive in markets where prices are volatile and customers need protection from unwanted and poorly understood risks. This viewpoint describes the fundamentals and explains what has been driving their phenomenal growth in the recent past in the USA.
