  • Abstract
After the release of dioxin-contaminated feed compounds in Belgium in 1999, a potential exposure risk existed for livestock populations and consumers elsewhere. In order to illustrate the strength of risk assessment techniques in emergency situations, a risk simulation model was developed to explore the exposure and consequences after a hypothetical introduction of contaminated material into the pork production chain in an importing country. The case of Denmark was used as an example. Exposure of pigs and consumers was quantified and the health consequences for consumers were assessed qualitatively. It was illustrated how available information can be organised systematically within a risk model and that quantitative decision support can be provided quickly making optimal use of all available information.
