Mathematical aspects of inverse problems, model calibration, and parameter identification

In this overview we consider three major aspects of modelling, namely the variety of competing models (the ‘model zoo’), the aspect of scales (averaging and homogenization), and numerical methods for parameter identification problems (regularization). We point out the basic difficulties that one faces whenever inverse problems are taken into consideration.
