Abstract :
The program ATEMIS — Air Traffic Emission Simulation — was developed [1] for calculating the exhaust emissions from air traffic (civil IFR flights) over Austria. A model with 12 parameters is used which allows the generation of thrust and engine performance and from that fuel flow ffi characteristies for each type of aircraft (engine) i. Total exhaust emissions Ep for pollutants p can be calculated by combining fuel flow with specific emission data ep,i, which originate from the ICAO Engine Exhaust Emission Databank. This concept guarantees high flexibility. Depending on the available data on aircraft and engine types, power settings and engine performances, ATEMIS can be used for simulating a single aircraftʹs flight as well as for nationwide surveys on air traffic emissions. The main features of ATEMIS are (at the moment): (1) Implemented pollutants: CO, NOx, VOC; (2) The Aircraft Parameter Editor which allows linking of performance and emission data for each aircraft type in a user friendly manner using pull-down menus; (3) The Calculation Model which not only allows calculation of emissions within a specified area or altitude but also editing of flight routes, aircraft and airport data. For the first time, ATEMIS has been used to calculate the exhaust emissions caused by air traffic over Austria.
