Abstract :
An efficient new numerical method for simultaneously simulating soil water flow and plant root growth is presented. It allows the calculation of the water uptake of an entire root system while preserving the local impact of single roots. The approach is based on the adaptive finite-element method, which enables a flexible fine resolution along individual roots, which cannot be achieved by classical non-adaptive algorithms.
