Hillock recognition by digital image processing

A method for quick comparison of the quality of an Al surface was developed. The image acquired from an optical microscope by a TV camera is stored, transformed to a binary form and processed in order to obtain a hillock image. It allows for immediate statistical evaluation. The distribution of the Al hillock density versus their diameter is presented as well as a comparison with SEM and Alpha-step measurements.
