Abstract :
In 1912, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) selected William Stanley as the fourth recipient of its Edison Medal. He was cited for his contributions to the "development of alternating current systems and apparatus." He had designed and installed the first successful system of alternating current distribution using transformers in the United States during the 1880s. His improvements in transformer design were adopted generally, and he also conducted influential tests of a high-voltage transmission.
