This paper has argued that in the case of a semi-peripheral country, where the state is centralized and enjoys autonomy from social pressures, a partial application of three theories - the capitalist interpretation of the nature of the state, namely the Weberian-Hintzian approach; the world-system theory; and the dependency paradigm - is necessary to help us understand the state, its structure, its capacity, and its position in the capitalist world economy. The major theoretical contribution of this study has been to bring about a synthesis of perspectives -derived from the above mentioned theories - namely dependent development, semi-periphery, and authoritarian-bureaucratic structure - and two concepts: autonomy, and interdependence. Hence this model coincides with the characteristics of the state during the Shahיs reign in Iran (1953-1979).
