In the early years of the 21st century, public and private organizations in the US became concerned about their growing dependence on the Persian Gulf crude oil imports. For the same reason, they urged the US government to devise efficient and long-term policies and plans that could help minimize the risks of such dependency. US crude oil imports from the Persian Gulf stands at just about 11.2 percent of its total world imports. The US has strategic and well-established relations with the majority of Persian Gulf littoral states. The question remains that how come the United States is still concerned about oil flow and why it seeks to further control the oil-rich region of Persian Gulf? The following article delves into the main reasons and international objectives behind the US foreign policy in the Persian Gulf. It also reviews and analyzes the consequences of such policy for the US and other regional and international players.
