In this paper, the effects of random variables of seismic demand and
capacity on expected level ofperformance ofmoment resisting steelframes designed
according to Iranian codes, are investigated. Initially a finite element model of a
rigid connection has been developed and the range of variation s in strength and
stiffness of the connection caused by randomn ess of material and geometry of the
connection has been determined. The data has subsequently been used for nonlinear
dynam ic analysis of 84 frames with 8 to 15 stories and 4 or 5 spans subjected to
seven scaled earthquake records . The induced seismic demands have been compared
with frames capacities and the performance levels of these structures are compared
with those expected by design code. Finally by filling a suitable probability density
function to these data, a reliability assessment has been carried out.
