The anti-emetic effect of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Mentha xpiperita
aerial parts was studied in young chickens. Emesis was induced using copper
sulfate (60 mg/kg, orally) and ipecac (600 mg/kg, orally). The aqueous extract (40-
100 mg/kg, i.p.) and the ethanolic extract (320-800 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly
prevented the emesis induced by copper sulfate and ipecac. Preliminary tests
indicated that the aqueous and ethanolic extracts of M. xpiperita aerial parts
comprised tannins. Saponins were found only in the ethanolic extract. The LD50 values
of the aqueous and ethanolic extracts (i.p.) were 673.7 mg/kg and 1653.2 mg/kg in
the chickens, respectively. These results indicate that the extracts of M. xpiperita
aerial parts have an anti-emetic activity in young chickens with peripheral and central
mechanisms.
