Objectives: To determine whether antiphosphatidyl serine autoantibodies (aPS) are associated with increased risk of occur rence of coronary events inselected patients. Methods : This study compared so patients with coronary events with 30 controls. recruited from the cities of Mosul, Erbil, and Dohuk cities, Northern Iraq, between March 2004 and March zo os . The pa tient group consisted of Z3 indivi duals wit h myocardial infarction and 27 with an gina . We evaluated the presence of aPS antibodies (IgG and IgM iso typ es) by an enz yme-linked immunosorbent assay. The studied cas es were less than so years of age (mean ± SD, 39.6 ± 5.9) and had no recognizable risk facto rs. Results: The frequen cy of de tectin g IgG aPS was 10/50 (zo%) among patie nt s and 1/ 30 (3.3%)amo ng controls, with significant differe nce and with adjusted od ds rat io (OR) o f 3 .Z (9s%CI, 1.1-9.1; p < 0.05). The IgM aPS frequenc y was 3/50 (6%) among pat ien ts and zero in the controls, with non- signifi cant difference. The three cases were also IgG positive (i.e. the freq uency rate for de tec t ion of aPS of IgM was the same as for IgG). Mor eo ver, this mark er (aPS) was detected in 8h z (66 .7%) of cases with unstable angina , in zils (13.3%) with stableangina, and in none of the cases with myocardial infarction. Conclusion: IgG aPS autoantibodies are associated with increased risk of coronary events especially angina of unstable subset.
