The United Nations throughout its history has had a number of crucial
turning points which can be regarded as the highlights of its role and activity in
contemporary international system. Without a doubt, the role played by the UN in the
aftermath of Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait in 1990 up to the American occupation of Iraq
in 2003 is the most important epoch in the life of the United Nations. This article is
an attempt to explore and discuses the role of the United Nations in this conflict
which covers the period from early 1990s to the US military operation against Iraq
in 2003 and up to December 2004/January 2005 when the general election is due to
be held in Iraq.
