Granulated blast-furnace slag is used as a supplementary cementitious material in
replacement ofcement in many countries. In Algeria, its proportion is usually limited to 15-20%
ofcement replacement owing to a significant decrease in early age mechanical strength. In this
experimental work, on the one hand, the percentage ofthe slag in cement (chemical effect) was
varied and, on the other hand, the specific surface ofthe slag cement prepared (physical effect)
by the method ofsubstitution (partial replacement ofthe clinker by the slag) was also varied.
According to the experimental results, it follows:
* a mortar prepared from a composed cement containing until 30% ofslag can reach
mechanical strengths (R; and R} comparable to those ofa witness without slag,
* the hydraulic activity and the increase in the specific surface of the granulated slag of
blast furnace are the principal persons in charge for the increase in the mechanical strengths in
the mortars tested.
