A solid - liquid - gas, multiphase reactor, called InverseFluidizedBedBioreactor (IFBBR) was used in this study for the treatment of starch industry wastewater of high organic content and. acidic nature. Mixed culture obtained from the sludge, taken from starch industry efiluent treatment plant, was usedasיmicroorganisms. Experimentswerecarried out in an Inverse fluidized bedbioreactor, afterthe formation ofbiofilm. onthe surfaceoflow-density particles (Density = 870kg/mי). Degradation wasstudied byvarying the initialbedheighti.e.,40, 60,80and 100cm and forvarious gasflow rates foreachinitialbedheight.Fromthe resultsitwasobserved that a maximum CODremovalof94.3% andBODremovalofיSl%wereachievedin this reactor.It occurswhenthe bed height is 80 em for the airflow rate 225 LPH. It was also observedthat 70% removal of total solids.
