Fractionation studies on the sedimentsamplesprovide valuable information on the nature of the metals bound to the sediments. Thirty three sediment samples of RiverAdyar were
collected during two seasons and speciation study was carried out. The industrial and domestic effluents are directedintothe river courseat manypoints in the middleand lowerof theAdyar.River.
Toascertainthe extent ofheavymetal pollution in the bedsedimentsofthe river, total metal content and speciationwere evaluated. The summationofthe metal recoveriesin the sequentialextractions
was foundto bewithin ±lO% of the total metal content. The mobility factor was evaluatedwhich represents the exchangeableand Carbonatefractions in the sediments. RiskAssessmentCodewas
estimatedand the results revealthe extent of risk associatedwith the heavymetals in the sediments in variousstations. The results of speciation showsthat Cu and Ni falls in the high risk categoryat
certain stationsofthe middleand lowerpart ofthe river.ExceptCr, Fe and Zn, all other heavymetals studied showmediumrisk with regard to RAC.The effectofmonsoon on the concentration of the
metals in various fractions had been studied and the significance of seasonal effect is determined using t-test.
