The KarkhehDamReservoir with a capacityofmore than 5 billioncubicm.eter is the largestdam in Iran withboth agriculturaland drinking usages. Itshydrodynamics and waterquality
weremodeled and simulatedto analyze the total maximum daily load (TMיDL) of TotalDissolved Solids (TDS). The simulation was supported with measurem.ents of temperature and TDS measurementsduring twoyears.Alaterallyaveraged2DmodelcalledCE-QUAL-W2wasused for
the simulation and hypoth.eticallow height spillways wereimplemented in themodelto avoiddrying of the cells in the river branch. The model wasthen calibrated successfully with an absolutemean
error ofO.710 C. More importantly, vertical stratification of temperature and TDS in the Karkheh Reservoir was reproducedbythe modelthroughout years2000 to 2003. The calibratedmodel was
then used to simulate water quality response to various TDS reduction scenarios. Model results revealthat a 50%reductionof theTDS load is required for a 40% reductionofTDS in the reservoir outlet. The modeling of a complex combination of a steep and long river -reservoir system. was another important achievementof this study.
