Kanizsa reported a visual size illusion in which an object occluded by another seems narrower
than the physically identical unoccluded object (Kanizsa shrinkage illusion). This illusion has been ascribed
to occlusion and subsequent amodal completion. Here we have reported that observers can report this illusion,
even after presentations which are shorter than the necessary time for completion to finish. This finding
implies that mechanisms faster than perceptual completion are responsible for perception of this illusion.
