Phatic communion is a new linguistic conception coined and crystalized by the British-Polish anthropologist Malinowski in the first quarter of the pre-century. It is associated with one of the crucial and fundamental functions of language. Malinowski considers language as the backbone of social relationships, as not all of people s speech function is to convey and seek information throughout their exchanging, rather it establishes and maintains social contact. He states that phatic communion is a type of speech in which ties of union are created by a mere exchange of words.
