This study aims at examining the mediatized political discourse of Mohammad Saзīd Al-Şahhaf, the former Iraqi minister of information in order to reveal the secrets of the unprecedented popularity he earned- thanks to his military briefings in the third Gulf war of 2003. The research is based on the hypothesis that Şahhaf, has deviated from the media political discourse to the media entertainment discourse. According to Fairclough (1995), there is pressure on, and a recent trend by, the media to entertain. The study, therefore, examines three kinds of statements because they are inherently entertaining and because of their frequent, noticeable occurrence in his briefings. These statements are (a) figurative statements, (b) allusions and (c) offensive statements. I have taken statement (vs. sentence or phrase) as my unit of analysis because it is a unit of action as I shall argue later. I shall examine these statements in terms of mainly the interpersonal function of language as taken by Halliday (1974). According to Halliday, language has three functions: the textual function, the ideational function and the interpersonal function. The first has to do with text cohesion and coherence, the second with ideas and experiences and the third with the attitude of the text-producer. The study examines the concept of discourse in general, media discourse, media entertainment discourse and all discourserelated concepts such as genre, mode, tenor and voice of discourse. It ends in conclusion
