A CONTRASTIVE ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH an‎d ARABIC PLURAL FORMATION

It has been axiomatically assumed in contrastive linguisticsthat contrastive analyses generally aim at revealing thediscrepancies and congruencies between particular grammaticalstructures of the languages under consideration and thusultimately contribute to the improvement of foreign languageteaching, (Snook 1971). They can also make useful andsubstantial contribution to translational linguistics, especially tomachine translation and linguistics typology.The present contrastive analysis of plural formation in Englishand Arabic, however, tries to reveal through morphologicalcontrastivity and exemplification areas of discrepancies andcongruencies of plural formation in both languages.
