Modernism brought up a general unease, a vague and fearful dread of Ii fe in general. This general unease was the result of a re-working of ideas, a process that had taken place in the last twenty years of the nineteenth century. The writers of the period (Hardy among them) reworked ideas and sought parallels, analogues, or images in scientific thought. lhis dread was expressed in new ideas, but it produced relatively little experiment in new literary forms
