The Victorian period (1837-1901) is one of the most significant periods in the history England. Many crucial changes took place, both in society and politics that, placed England on the first step to modernism. One of the major literary figures of this period is Lord Alfred Tennyson ( 1809-1883). He is regarded as the spokesman of his age. In his poetry he reflected the ideas and beliefs of his age. One of his main poems is Ulysses, which is based on Greek mythology. The aim of this study is to shed the light on the myth of Ulysses and Tennyson s use of myth to reflect personal and social matters. In the first section, I will give an introduction containing the historical background of the Victorian period in which Tennyson Lived, Tennyson s life and work, besides the definition of a myth. Section two will be a revelation of the original story of Ulysses. Section three conveys the detailed meaning of Tennyson s Ulysses and a critical commentary on it. The conclusion will sum up the findings of the research
