This study examines the language learning strategies used by EFL students, paying close attention to the difference between male and female in strategy use. The subjects were (100) students enrolled in the departments of English college of education Ibn - Rushd and college of Education for women /Baghdad university. Oxford (1990) questionnaire Strategy Inventory for language learning (SILL) was used. Statistical means such as frequency means and standard deviation were used to identify the strategies used by students. Also independent sample t-test was used to see the differences between male and female in strategy use. The results showed that the students were high to medium user of strategies . The most frequently used strategies were meta cognitive strategies where as memory strategies were the lest used ones . Also the results showed that female were more frequently used strategies than male and there were statistically significant differences between male and female concerning cognitive, Meta cognitive and affective strategies.
