Apologies are one of the many speech acts that are frequently used in human interaction. An apology is called for when the apologiser has done something which is annoying or damaging to the addressed person. The apologiser now regrets having done the act and takes responsibility for it by uttering an apology. Apologies are negative politenesss trategies aimed at remedying the effects of an offence or a face-threatening act and restoring social harmony.This study tries to examine the apologising behaviour of English speakers, as a strategy to express negative politeness.It tries to define apologies, when it is polite to apologise, and the basic apology strategies and examples of the semantic formulas that realize them are introduced. It also tries to find out apology response strategies, and the differences between men and women in giving and receiving apologies.
