The word selection appears quite often in the books of the sciences of prophetic Tradition (Hadith). It has not been separately studied however. This research studies critically the concept selection. It gives the concept a comprehesive definition, demonstrates the scholars' different opinions about it and shows the stronger one. It also gives the conditions which qualify somone to select and determines the motives of the scholars and the students of seleciton. The research defines two types of selection: the selection of the narrators and the seleciton of narrations. In addition it discusses the forms of selection as occurred in the books of the sciences of Hadith and mentions the symbols and the colors used by the scholars to distinguish the selected narrations
