In discussing the loss/gain dichotomy, the current paper relies on the philosopher Taha Abderrahman’s demarcation between the sublime utterance (Allah’s words) and the superficial utterance (Man’s words). The translation concepts that govern superficial utterances are not necessarily appropriate to Godly utterances. The issue of loss in the translation of the superficial speech presumes the matter of gain in the target language. Loss in the translation of superficial speech is not a loss in the absolute sense, but one that rapidly becomes a gain in the quest for symmetry in the target language. Loss in the translation of the sublime text, however, remains a mere loss which, the least the target language can do in its failure to translate it fully is convey some of its sense in an appealing language to encourage the target reader to refer to the Qur'an to retrieve what is missed in the target language.
