This paper aims to exploring Sufism and the Sufi brotherhood, particularly in Egypt, by tracing their effects on the religious and social lives of Egyptians during period of Ottoman rule in the eleventh century AH (seventeenth century AD). An attempt is made to present a clearly defined picture of the Sufi community and its expressions in Egypt based on the descriptions given by explorer Evliya Çelebi in his travelogue. The research discusses and analyzes samples of the writer's own eyewitness accounts as well as the oral accounts he recorded in an attempt to identify the manner in which Sufism presented itself to the popular imagination based on a record of historical events. Those who are acquainted with the abundance of this explorer's writings on Sufism, the Sufi brotherhood, their rituals, and their cultic practices will appreciate how deeply Sufism had penetrated into popular consciousness and the degree to which it had spread among the elite and the general populace alike. The historical and academic value of what Evliya Çelebi recorded in his travelogue becomes apparent when one realizes that the details of the history of Sufism in Egypt during the Ottoman period. Apart from a few scattered references whichare insufficient to give us a true picture of Sufism, its brotherhoods, and their practices, few modern studies of Sufism during this historical period are available. Therefore, Evliya Çelebi has done us a great service by making his exhaustive account available to modern scholars of the history of Sufism
