This paper presents a method to estimate the states of a vehicle suspension system based on a quarter-car two-degree-of-freedom model. This dynamic system is excited by an unknown road displacement. This makes the application of classical state estimators useless. The presented novel method introduces an extended observer that can estimate the states and the external excitation itself given position measurements only. For control, the dynamics of the passive system is analyzed using computer simulation. It is shown that the behavior of the system depends not only on its poles but on the zeros as well, which forms a challenging problem for control design. Based on that, four linear controllers are proposed, designed, analyzed and discussed. They range from a simple lead compensator to a state feedback controller that can be designed to resemble skyhook control. The merits and disadvantages of these controllers are discussed.
