Background & Objective: Anatomical features and color characteristics of teeth may affect the recipient signals' nature during dental pulp oximetry, enamel tissue thickness may consider of the most important factors.
This clinical study aimd to evaluate the effect of enamel tissue thickness of the upper premolar crown on the accuracy of dental pulp oxygen saturation readings.
Materials& methods: 24 intact mature upper premolars in need of preparation for fixed ceramic crowns; collected from 22 healthy male; 18-36 years old; without any systemic disorder; with systemic saturation more than 95% ,were studied.
Values of pulpal oxygen saturation of these teeth were measured using ear probe before and after crown chamfer preparation; and enamel removal on all tooth surfaces, then these values were compared.
Results: Statistical study using T-student test revealed significant increasing of 2.75%± 1.67 in the mean value of dental pulp saturation after enamel removal (P<0.05).
The mean value of readings was 87.29% ±2.176 before preparation, against 90.04% ±2.031 after the preparation.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that there is a considerable effect of the dental tissue thickness on the dental pulp oxygenation measurement.
So; it is of important to find the suitable adjustments on the PO apparatus, probe, or programs, in order to gain less effect of the anatomical variances between teeth, and thus increasing pulse oximetry measurement accuracy.
