Background & Objective: Pressure sores (bed sores) are one of the medical problems which happen to disable patients, patients in coma and patients in the medical and surgical intensive care units, in addition to trauma and burns patients.
These problems are difficult to treat.
This medical problem leads to the deterioration of patients' medical condition and increases the suffering of patients and families.
It will lead to continuous draining of their financial and moral resources.
Bradon(1) in a study from several hospitals in the year 2010, he estimated the cost of each hospitalisation patient being up to $78,000.
Musculo-cutaneous flaps and muscle flaps are considered the treatment of choice to reduce the possibility of recurrence of pressure sores and to fascilitate the rehabilitation of patients.
The aim of study was to find out the importance of the use of musculo-cutaneous flaps and muscle flaps in pelvic pressure sores at Mouassat University Hospital, and to find a suitable guideline.
Methods & Materials: The study looked at 32 patients with pelvic pressure sores in the plastic and reconstructive and burns unit at Mouassat University Hospital.
18 of these patients were managed with musculo-cutaneous flaps.
Although, the study was performed in a retrospective manner during the period between 01.06.2005 to 01.06.2010, all the patients were managed according to the same guideline of preparation and follow-up.
Results: Musculo-cutaneous flaps were used in 60% of patients with pelvic pressure sores, half of these patients previously underwent several procedures for the same reason.
Most of the patients were followed up for more than two years.
Recurrence happened in two cases only (less than 10% of cases) and this is an excellent ratio in comparison with international studies.
Conclusion: The recruitment of musculo-cutaneous flaps in managing the pelvic pressure sores reduces the risk of recurrence, and reduces the time of patient's stay in hospital and the total cost.
The cure of the pressure sores will lead eventually to getting these patients involved again with their families and society.
