Proteus mirabilis is a common pathogen responsible for complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs). The aim was for isolation and identification of P. mirabilis from patients with UTI from human and sheep and evaluation of sociodemographic factors associated with infection. This study was performed from October 2017 to February 2018. A total of 250 human and 190 sheep mid stream urine samples were examined and cultured on both blood and MacConkey agar for detection of P. mirabilis identified by morphological and biochemical tests. The mean age of human presented with UTI was 27.88±11.680 years, whilein sheep 8.93±2.840 months. P. mirabilis was isolated from 60/250 samples, (24%). The main affected age group was (17-23) years, (33.33%). The least age group was (3-9) years and (10-16) years, each with 4%. A (66.67%) of patients with positive P. mirabilis have secondary education level, while patients with primary education represent 1.67%. A total of (93.33%) of positive patients drinking filtrated water. The residency of (63.33%) of positive cases was Baqubah- al takia, while the least was from Khalis and Khan keen (3.34%). Individuals with positive P. mirabilis in urine samples were suffered from dysuria (13.33%), hematuria (43.33%), flank pain (63.33%) and fever (45%).The mean age of sheep presented with UTI was 8.93±2.840 months. P. mirabilis was isolated from 30/190, (15.78%) samples. The first age group with UTI and positive P. mirabilis was 10-12 months, (43.33%). All positive cases drinking river water and tap water (mixed). The residency of (80%) of positive cases was Khan Bani Saad while the least was from Al-Mufraq (3.33%). Sheep with positive P. mirabilis in urine sample, suffered from dysuria (23.33%), hematuria (50%). In conclusion, P. mirabilis represent an important causative agent for UTI in human and sheep. In human flank pain, fever, and hematuria were more common complains, while in sheep, hematuria and dysuria were more common complains. The intensity of infection may affected by sociodemographic factors both in human and in sheep.
